Ayurveda sees that everything in nature – including ourselves, and the food we eat – has three fundamental controlling principles or Doshas. These Doshas are Vata (movement), Pitta (transformation) and Kapha (structure). Each of us is unique in that our body has its own particular balance of these Doshas. When we maintain that inherent balance, we remain healthy.
When we sit for a family meal, everyone is usually given the same foods. Yet the elements we need on order for us to be fully nourished, and remain in good balance, may be quite different from one family member to another. Also, as the weather has a powerful influence on our Doshas, our needs will change according to the season.
Maharishi Ayurveda supplies a number of Vata, Pitta and Kapha seasonings and spice mixes, called Churnas. These Churnas can be added to any meal in order to promote balance for each individual throughout the year.
Spices are not just great flavour-enhancers, they help detoxify the body, aid digestion and have numerous therapeutic properties. They also ensure that each meal contains all the six-tastes that Ayurveda sees as essential for our body to feel fully satisfied and to thereby eliminate food cravings.
