Ayurveda enhances fertility. Medicine treats infertility. Since they work well together why not use both?
Ayurveda, promoted nowadays by the World Health Organization, is the most ancient Tradition of Health. It uses many strategies to improve health and to prevent and treat disease. Such as personalised diet, lifestyle, stress management, mental and emotional nourishment, herbal tonics, processes of clearing toxins from the body and rejuvenating treatments; definitely a holistic, whole-person approach. With a special section, called Vajikarana, that deals with fertility and infertility and production of healthy offspring.
Medicine uses lifestyle, medical, surgical and Assisted Reproductive technologies to treat infertility:
- Lifestyle: weight optimisation, stop smoking/alcohol, manage chronic disease;
- Medical: ovulation induction, hormonal therapy;
- Surgical: fibroid removal, tubal repair, varicocele repair;
- Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART): Intrauterine Insemination, In Vitro Fertilisation, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, Use of donor gametes or surrogacy where appropriate.
Since medicine is open to lifestyle interventions, and since Ayurveda gives knowledge of the most appropriate personalised interventions that work, it would seem wise to combine both approaches. Especially since Ayurveda is natural, free of side effects, is compatible with the medical approach and has its own strategies for dealing with infertility.
